Words of Wisdom: When one goes hiking in the back woods during hunting season, one should always wear hunter orange.

I am not a hunter, nor have I ever been (not that there is anything wrong with being one!). So the dates of the different hunting seasons have never been important enough for me to take note of them. This will now have to change with me doing a lot of hiking in the back country, especially during the fall. It’s a shame that I wasn’t aware that we are in deer hunting season here in Idaho, before I drove an hour to get the hike start point for Deep Creek Peak. While weaving my way back and forth on the back country road, I kept seeing guys with rifles slung over their backs, wearing the always visible hunter blaze orange. After passing at least 20-30 people along the way, all doing the same thing, I realized that my attire was not the safest, considering I was in the midst of numerous hunters. My shirt was tan and black and my pants brown. The only thing I was missing was a hat with antlers, and I could have passed for a deer at a distance. Since I didn’t care for the thought of getting shot by some hunter who mistook me for a buck, I turned back and went home. I will be purchasing some hunter orange attire (hat, vest, etc.) soon so I don’t have to call off a hike again due to this issue. I did take a few pictures during my road trip, which are below.
